Test footage explained

Weather

This is the weather report for the week ahead, we have realised that the weather can hinder our filming ability by quite a vast amount. When you need the right weather you have to plan ahead for it. If you don't plan ahead for it then you will waste days of filming to the lack of appropriate weather. Luckily we have seen the fact that the weather isn't the greatest this week and have made other filming plans that don't require filming outside. We do need some outside shots, but these will only be for certain parts of the film, which doesn't really matter what the weather is like, and for the last couple of scenes where he see's the girl on the drum kit, natural light is important. This is an important scene for the film because we want it to be a defining part of the film that he cant get rid of her that easily etc.

Weather has always been a deciding factor in our filming process so we need to make sure that we get the right weather for the right scenes to make the pathetic falacy aspect of the film come through a lot clearer for the audience. Pathetic falacy is a great technique to use in filming for such a raw song, we're hoping that we will be able to pull this off naturally, but if not we will need some more time in the editing stage to brighten or dim the scene to make it closer to the emotion of the certain scene.

Diary of a day's shooting - Southend

However, we found the footage gathered was not appropriate for our video, neither of a high standard, therefore we need to change our location and re-shoot.

Filming Key points

Wordle: UntitledThis is a Wordle of the different ideas we need to think about when choosing everything for filming. All of these things are all very important to the film and all need to be carefully thought out before we jump into the filming as this is the most important part of the whole course.

Transition test

We wanted to try this edit out because we found that it is a very effective editing technique in a music video, having a constant change of scenery is very effective for the audience because it keeps them interested and also, if done correctly, when in goes with the rhythm of the song makes it even better to watch. We want to get the audience more engaged using this technique because we feel that having more vibrant editing makes the video better to watch and will hopefully make the audience want to continue watching without getting too bored.

Demographs and Psychographs

Demographs are a great way of classing the general public. Classing the public is paramount to making a music video as it tells us how to make video that most people want to see. This is because people that are classed together generally have the same interests. Demographic sorting is sorting by income and job. For this we use the social grade scale devised by the NRS (National Readership Audience).

A-Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.

B-Middle management, teachers, creative and media people eg graphic designers etc.

C1-Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff - white collar

C2-Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders - blue collar

D-Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers

E-unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers

Above is the list of the demographic classes. From out of our groups personal experience of music. Most indie listeners are E classed students so as this is the largest audience it would be logical to make our music video for them.

While psychographic is sorting people by their personality. This would be important to take account of too. As a large class of the psychographic could enjoy something and despise another and if you make the thing they despise you are losing allot of viewers.

Mainstreamers- Tend to be domestic, conformist, sentimental- favour value for money family brands. Nearly always the largest group.

Aspirers- Materialistic, acquisitive, orientated to image and appearance, persona and fashion, Attractive packaging more important than contents. typically younger people, Clerical and sales jobs.

Succeeders- Strong goals, confidence , work ethic and organisation. supports stability. Brand choice based on self reward and quality. Typically higher management and professionals.

Resigned- Rigid and authoritarian values. Interested in the past and tradition. Brand choice stresses safety, familiarity and economy. Typically older people.

Strugglers- Alienated and disorganised. Few resources beyond physical skills. Brand choice involves impact and sensation. Buys alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets. D and E demographic.

Reformers- Freedom of restrictions and personal growth. Social awareness. anti materialistic but aware of good taste. Has attended higher education and selects products for quality.

Explorers- Energy, indvidualism and experience. Values diffrenece and adventure. Brand choice highlights satisfaction, and instant effect. the first to try new brand. Younger demographic - students

As Mainstreamer is the largest group it would be obvious to make our music video target them however as we choose to target the group E which is made of students (the youth) which comes under Aspirers group. This means we must target our music video towards the Mainstreamer and Aspirers to make the film go out to the largest audience thus make the most profit.

Questionnaire

In order to target our audience, we decided to create a questionnaire to gather data so that we know who to successfully target our music video at. We also created it to know what our particular audience expects in a good music video.

Astral Media Logo

This is our finished product for our Media Company's logo.

I went about creating this by taking the name we had already agreed on 'Astral Media', and trying to make something that looked quite space age but still followed the basic conventions of a logo.

When I thought 'Astral' I instantly thought of some sort of solar/star explosion. I tried countless times to create it in my own way, getting the kind of image i had in my head. After much thought and determination to create it, I decided to look for an alternative route. I found a website called http://www.brushking.eu/ where you can download brush sets to your Photoshop software and use them in your photo creation. I instantly searched for 'space' and 'Explosion'. I found the perfect brush set to go with what i had in my head. I used all of these different brushes and finally found the one above.

For the background I didn't want to just have a block colour so I decided I should experiment with different background ideas. I found a function called 'fibres' and it was a type of break up for a solid image or colour. I put the fibres in black and had a solid crimson background and began to 'decorate' the background with these tiny little fibres and I found that it broke apart the solid image and made it look a lot more professional over the conventional solid background. I also highlighted the fact that I added more fibres to the left and right side of the image to act as a sort of framing technique for the image.

For the text I found a font on a site called http://www.dafont.com/ where I found a recreation of the 'Gears of War' franchise's text, it's very beaten and block capitalised which makes it a very dominant text but the fact that it's beaten up can show that it's a war beaten text, or in my case a meteor beaten text, also linking with the name of the company. All I then needed to do was figure out where I wanted to place the text because that could make or break the whole image. I put it in all of the conventional places, like underneath and on top of the main focus of the image, but it just seemed to look like every other logo. I put it in the top left corner and didn't like it but i did like the offset nature of the text. When I put it on the bottom left it was complete.

Video Anaysis

We chose to analyse this particular video because it clearly demonstrates the elements needed in the indie/alternative rock genre.

Moodboard

This mood board is a perfect representation of what the 'indie' genre means to us. The lyrical sheet was put in to show that each song is personal to the artist and for the most part, has a significant meaning (unlike pop music for example).

The field on the right shows the summery feeling you get when listening to particular songs, as well as a very natural sounding style of music (acoustic guitars etc.)

The vinyl records and glasses highlight the 'retro' or 'vintage' style of clothing in particular.

The two artists ( Bob Dillon & Frank Turner ) are inspirational figures in the genre for us. Frank turner (bottom right) is much more of a 'little guy' and writes his music to get his message across rather than aiming to make the number one spot in the charts etc.

Music genres and why we chose ours.

The following post will detail the broad range of possible genre we could do our music video on. We created this post so we could easily see and review all the music genres. It also makes it easier to see what would fit our demographic and psychographics audiences.

1.       the principle of letting anyone do it the genre consists of heavy, Alternative

a.       Indie - From the word Independent, This genre is largely based on a do it your self-culture. The bands are normally signed to low budget small labels.

b.      Punk – On loud, fast guitar matched with vocals which can often just be shouting.

2.       Dance

a.       Dubstep- Originating from experimental garage music, dubstep gives a darker feel and is more dependent of the bass with repeat bass drops throughout.

b.      Garage- Is a more polished version of House music. This sub-genre of dance music includes gospel influenced piano riffs and female voices.

c.       Jungle- Jungle music incorporates reggae music with a dance beat.

3.       Rap- Spoken word to a rhythm often backed by a simple drum beat.

4.       Jazz- Is a large music genre which takes it influences from European and African music traditions.

5.       Pop- From the word popular is just genre that takes influences from all other genres and puts them into a single format. The songs are usually simple catchy repeated riffs.

6.       Reggae- Started in Jamaica it is played on a slow off beat.

7.       Rock

a.       Death Metal- A sub-genre of rock, which uses harsh guitars and vocals. It includes multiple tempo changes.

b.      Glam Rock- The use of flamboyant and outrageous clothes and on stage visuals made glam rock its own genre. The primary aim of glam rock was stage man ship.
c. Soft Rock-  Soft rock songs generally tend to focus on themes like love, everyday life and relationships. The genre tends to make heavy use of acoustic guitars, pianos, synthesizers and sometimes saxophones. The electric guitars in soft rock are normally faint and high-pitched.

We chose the Rock genre as it is generalised as homemade and do it yourself. As we didn’t have large budget for the video, we believed this would be easier to achieve and look better. The genre is also associated with young new groups so as majority of our cast would be 17/18 this would make a more realistic video that stays true to the genre.
