Demographs and Psychographs

Demographs are a great way of classing the general public. Classing the public is paramount to making a music video as it tells us how to make video that most people want to see. This is because people that are classed together generally have the same interests. Demographic sorting is sorting by income and job. For this we use the social grade scale devised by the NRS (National Readership Audience).

A-Higher management, bankers, lawyers, doctors and other professionals.

B-Middle management, teachers, creative and media people eg graphic designers etc.

C1-Office supervisors, junior managers, nurses, specialist clerical staff - white collar

C2-Skilled manual workers, plumbers, builders - blue collar

D-Semi-skilled and unskilled manual workers

E-unemployed, students, pensioners, casual workers

Above is the list of the demographic classes. From out of our groups personal experience of music. Most indie listeners are E classed students so as this is the largest audience it would be logical to make our music video for them.

While psychographic is sorting people by their personality. This would be important to take account of too. As a large class of the psychographic could enjoy something and despise another and if you make the thing they despise you are losing allot of viewers.

Mainstreamers- Tend to be domestic, conformist, sentimental- favour value for money family brands. Nearly always the largest group.

Aspirers- Materialistic, acquisitive, orientated to image and appearance, persona and fashion, Attractive packaging more important than contents. typically younger people, Clerical and sales jobs.

Succeeders- Strong goals, confidence , work ethic and organisation. supports stability. Brand choice based on self reward and quality. Typically higher management and professionals.

Resigned- Rigid and authoritarian values. Interested in the past and tradition. Brand choice stresses safety, familiarity and economy. Typically older people.

Strugglers- Alienated and disorganised. Few resources beyond physical skills. Brand choice involves impact and sensation. Buys alcohol, junk food, lottery tickets. D and E demographic.

Reformers- Freedom of restrictions and personal growth. Social awareness. anti materialistic but aware of good taste. Has attended higher education and selects products for quality.

Explorers- Energy, indvidualism and experience. Values diffrenece and adventure. Brand choice highlights satisfaction, and instant effect. the first to try new brand. Younger demographic - students

As Mainstreamer is the largest group it would be obvious to make our music video target them however as we choose to target the group E which is made of students (the youth) which comes under Aspirers group. This means we must target our music video towards the Mainstreamer and Aspirers to make the film go out to the largest audience thus make the most profit.

Questionnaire

In order to target our audience, we decided to create a questionnaire to gather data so that we know who to successfully target our music video at. We also created it to know what our particular audience expects in a good music video.

Astral Media Logo

This is our finished product for our Media Company's logo.

I went about creating this by taking the name we had already agreed on 'Astral Media', and trying to make something that looked quite space age but still followed the basic conventions of a logo.

When I thought 'Astral' I instantly thought of some sort of solar/star explosion. I tried countless times to create it in my own way, getting the kind of image i had in my head. After much thought and determination to create it, I decided to look for an alternative route. I found a website called http://www.brushking.eu/ where you can download brush sets to your Photoshop software and use them in your photo creation. I instantly searched for 'space' and 'Explosion'. I found the perfect brush set to go with what i had in my head. I used all of these different brushes and finally found the one above.

For the background I didn't want to just have a block colour so I decided I should experiment with different background ideas. I found a function called 'fibres' and it was a type of break up for a solid image or colour. I put the fibres in black and had a solid crimson background and began to 'decorate' the background with these tiny little fibres and I found that it broke apart the solid image and made it look a lot more professional over the conventional solid background. I also highlighted the fact that I added more fibres to the left and right side of the image to act as a sort of framing technique for the image.

For the text I found a font on a site called http://www.dafont.com/ where I found a recreation of the 'Gears of War' franchise's text, it's very beaten and block capitalised which makes it a very dominant text but the fact that it's beaten up can show that it's a war beaten text, or in my case a meteor beaten text, also linking with the name of the company. All I then needed to do was figure out where I wanted to place the text because that could make or break the whole image. I put it in all of the conventional places, like underneath and on top of the main focus of the image, but it just seemed to look like every other logo. I put it in the top left corner and didn't like it but i did like the offset nature of the text. When I put it on the bottom left it was complete.

We chose to analyse this particular video because it clearly demonstrates the elements needed in the indie/alternative rock genre.

Moodboard

This mood board is a perfect representation of what the 'indie' genre means to us. The lyrical sheet was put in to show that each song is personal to the artist and for the most part, has a significant meaning (unlike pop music for example).

The field on the right shows the summery feeling you get when listening to particular songs, as well as a very natural sounding style of music (acoustic guitars etc.)

The vinyl records and glasses highlight the 'retro' or 'vintage' style of clothing in particular.

The two artists ( Bob Dillon & Frank Turner ) are inspirational figures in the genre for us. Frank turner (bottom right) is much more of a 'little guy' and writes his music to get his message across rather than aiming to make the number one spot in the charts etc.
